Hello, My name is Hayley and I'm a student at Flagler College. I apologize for the fact that this is extreamly random. However, some classmates and myself are in the process of making a documentry for our class. The short film is about people overcoming their disabilities in every aspect of life (ie. education, profession...). You have inspired us, with a quote, "i chose not to place 'DIS', in my ability", to title our film "Ability". I was wondering if it would be alright with you if we put a little bio. about you in our film.
Thank you for being you. I know I speak for a lot of people when i say that you are a truly inspiring individual.

Hi. My name is Kaitlyn Reames. I am doing an 8-10 page research paper for AP English. The prompt is to compare at least two similarities between two different poets, one before the 1900's and one after. I have chosen your poem Peace of Mind to compare to W. B. Yeats The Lake Isle of Innisfree. I was wondering if you could give me any information about yourself, your poems, or anything!!??

Hi Robert,

It is just now, thanks to your academia.u click, that I discovered your existence; or more importantly : your poetic work. Brilliant. Reading the poems on your website disrupted my morning and derailed my normally steadfast rational thinking. I've rarely been so moved; as I type these lines still shaken to the core in fact.
Before I write anything stupid a simple 'thank you' must do for now. I hope this mail finds you well and in good spirits.

Dec 04, 2012 - 08:25PM

Thank you for this website: your strength, your inspiration, your words. I just discovered who you are and this site today. I have been having a pitty party lately due to another diagnosis pending, and my family backing away from me as I have perceived it. But maybe it is me.

At any rate, searching for uplifting and humerous words about disability I stumbled upon many quotes from you and it peaked my interest, so here I am.

Rather than spending my tears on self pity I let them fall for the profound affect your words and attitude have had on me, and I have gathered strength and courage from you today. I feel like a human and not a disease now. Thank you for reaching out to us all, and spending your life doing rather than being. As soon as I get my next dg and hopefully some meds to allow me to be out in the world again, I will strive to do the same.

Hope is what gives people a string to hold onto when the rope has unravelled; thank you for my hope today. :)

Dear Mr Hensel

My name is Lowri-Mair Owen and I am a Development Officer working for a local education authority for young people accessing the special schools in a county called Rhondda Cynon Taff in South Wales United Kingdom. I run a project called C.A.S.T Academy which stands for (Creative Arts Special Theatre Academy) The project is a new thing for the area and we invite pupils out of the classroom to join us on the project for an academic year and work with them creatively under the guidance of specilaist artists, there are 16-20 artists that the children come into contact with. The pupils try their hand at everything from Theatre, Dance, Technical Theatre, Music, Photography, Poetry, Film-Making, Animation, Visual Arts that includes all aspects of set & prop design, costume making, front of house and so fourth. All of the children have additional learning needs and disabilities ranging from moderate to the most severe. At the end of the academic year all these aspects are pulled together and three special schools perform in a production and this is accompanied by an exhibition which is massively celebrated and the childrens work is rattified. Recently the children and the team created a set of values that informs the way we work at C.A.S.T Academy and value number one which has become out most important value is ..." I choose not to place DIS-in my ability" I hope this is O.K in the first instance and I wanted to let you know that this quote which now informs the heart of our work is truly inspirational. Everything we do for pupils is done with this saying at the forefront of our minds so I'd like to thank you for manifesting this vital saying. So often people focus on what these children cannot do and place limitations on them whether conciously or sub-conciously and it does nothing for their self-esteem so this is why we drive this value home time and time again. The project recognises that there is so much the children can do and we hold high expectations for each of the pupils and believe in them 100%

I understand you are extremely busy and may not reply to this but I just wanted to thank you anyway for inspiring me and my team which I hope, will inspire the children like a ripple in a pond effect.

Kindest Regards

from across the water

Hi Robert,

I'm writing a paper on accessibility and I was looking for great quotes to use. I somehow landed on your quotes. I find your quotes, and more importantly your story very inspiring. Life is truly what you make of it, we all have different types of challenges, but we each choose how to let those challenges be part of our life. Great work!

Hello! My name is Alison Nelson and I am writing to you to request permission to use a quote and image of you for a training curriculum I am developing. I work for a company called STAR Services and we provide support services to human services agencies in the state of MN. We are currently developing an on-line training program and one of the modules is for new support professionals working in the field. The class is about empowering individuals with a variety of disabilites or adaptive needs and how to assist them to be successful in leading their own independent lives. The quote we would like to use is “Placing one foot in front of the other, I’ve climbed to higher lengths. Reaching beyond my own limitations, to show my inner strength. No obstacle too hard, for this warrior to overcome. I’m just a man on a mission, to prove my disability hasn’t won.” We would like to use an image of Robert from the website to accompany this as well. I am hoping to be able to get permission to do so.

I can be reached at 651-644-3140, ext 207 if you have any questions, or via email at If you would like more information on our company to assist you in making a decision, our website is www. starsvcs. com (remove spaces).

Thank you so much for your time!

Hello Mr. Hensel,

I just wanted to send you a quick message in thanking you for being such an inspiration to many people. I am 20 years old and ever since I was in grade 5 I have been working with children/adults with different disabilities whether it be mental or physical. I get great joy in it because the people I work with are the most determined people in the world. Your quote of "Limitations only go so far" truely inspires me everyday. For that reason I actually have it as a tattoo on my ribs. I wanted to always have it with me because it means a lot to me and the people I work with.

I am in the process of trying to raise further awareness of Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus in the UK and Europe (and possibly eventually the USA). I am writing to you to see if you would kindly consider writing a short original poem, for inclusion in a book of poems which other famous actors like Dame Judi Dench, Bob Hoskins, Geoffrey Rush and others have kindly contributed too. Should you wish me to email you the official letter and list of current contributors’ please let me know.

Dear Mr. Hensel,

You have been an inspiration for so many and as one of the best poets of the 20th Century with nominations and wins in so many different areas, I wanted to reach out to you about a poet we have at our small press whose book of poetry is being published in the spring. Travis Naught was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy as an infant and has beat some amazing odds by graduating from high school and college and now at 28 years has written an incredible book that outlines his needs, wants, desires and frustrations from having lived an entire life confined to his wheelchair. However, he doesn't stand on a soap box and complain. Instead he has used his talents to express himself in a way that he can - through putting thoughts down on a piece of paper and wanting to share those thoughts with others.

The book is scheduled to come out in spring of 2012 and we are looking for testimonials to go on the book. If you had the time to read through this small book of poetry and prose and offer a quick testimonial, we would be most grateful.

Thank you so much for your time,

Greg Goldston

Hi. My name is Tori. I am 27 and was born with SB. I am going through a rough patch in my life right now and recently took up poetry writing and have been told I am quite good!

I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for all you are doing to change the perception of people who are differently-abled. I have found hope through your work; I myself have a disability and have had to fight against the stigma placed upon people who are different. I have severe Juvenile Arthritis and Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy; I can currently walk with an AFO orthotic brace and a cane, but have to use a wheelchair for long distances and have bouts when I cannot walk at all. When I was little, I transferred schools-twice- because people made fun of how I walked (I have had arthritis since before I was 4, and so I've never been able to run or walk correctly). I used to think that I could never do what other people could physically, and so I decided to do what they couldn't academically- I am now tri-lingual (English, Spanish and Italian) at the age of 18. Through the encouragement of people like you, I have realized that I can't let others limit me. So, I went t o Ecuador last year, climbed a volcano in the Galapagos (with some help), and am studying to be a marine biologist-planning to do field work in the Amazon. Thank you for being a source of inspiration for everyone who faces the challenges of living with a disability.

Katie  (and I am jealous of your mad wheelie skill... I've never held one for more than about 200 yards!)
